What I wear running in the winter

running log

People have often said to me "You don't run outside when it is cold like this do you?" I tell them I run outdoors year as often as I can. The secret is dress in layers. I had on a
long-sleeved t-shirt, hooded sweatshirt, hooded windbreaker, runners tights, athletic warm up pants tight around the ankles, two pair of cotton gloves and a stocking cap. People are always to hear how much you sweat in the winter

Getting Volunteers Is The Hardest Part

Getting Volunteers are the hardest part of putting on a race. It is comparably easy to just do the work yourself, because of all of the work necessary to put on a race, this is not possible. The harder part of trying getting others to help is necessary. It is a proven fact that in any group two or three percent of the people do 100% of the work. As one who has been a race director, I know that before that I had no idea of the amount of work that goes into putting on a race. It is so much more fun to talk to friends before and after running, instead of helping.

Galva Independence Day Is One Of My Favorite Races

Galva Independence day race

In these long cold winter months when sometimes it is hard to get out and run I start thinking about good times running in the summer. I was just thinking about the Galva Independence day race. I don’t think I have missed that race in the last 20 years. It’s always in Wiley Park in Galva. Wiley Park is a small park in the middle of the city with a picnic shelter in the center. Huge beautiful old houses with neatly manicured lawns surround the park. There are big wide sidewalks for runners to finish on.

I have loved the US Race Calendar

Julie and I at the Great Carp run on Credit Island

I have loved the US Race Calendar since I started doing it around 2000. It originally started it as a race calendar for our running club newsletter that I started doing sometime in the 1980's. I then became the webmaster http://www.grrc.net/ and learned web design. My wife Julie is still the newsletter editor and is club secretary and I am still the webmaster (the only one our club has had) I started a list for the race calendar but it got so big that people just wanted local races so I made a separate one for Illinois and one for up to 50 miles away.
