The real runners high

Runners high is caused by the release of a naturally occurring painkillers called endorphins during exercise. These are released at different levels in different people. They probably date back to the early development of human beings and the fight or flight response to danger. They are responsible for a feeling of euphoria and well being after intense exercise.

Half Marathon Training

I am in training for the Chicago Half Marathon in September. Work and family have kept me from running as much as I want. I should find a time of day to run when things do not get in the way and keep me from running. I ran the Quad Cities Distance Classic Half-Marathon at Augustana College in Moline, IL this spring. The last 3 miles were difficult and I walked quite a bit. I would like to do better this time.

Running On A Treadmill
I have tried running on a treadmill and it was just to boring. For a while we had a treadmill here at home it wore out. We have been a member of the local YMCA which has a brand new fitness center with state of the art treadmills in front of a battery of TV’s but it was just too boring for me. Author Dr. Stephen R. Covey reads while on running on a treadmill. I am spoiled by running outside it so great I could never be happy running on a treadmill cooped up inside.

Running hills is great speed work

Great run today, it was only about 20 degrees so I wore some loose fitting running tights, a sweatshirt, windbreaker, gloves and stocking cap. I ran about 4 miles on city streets and then ran over to Kiwanis Park. It is a small park probably less that 5 miles across but it has a lot of wooded and grassy areas with rolling hills. Some hills are short and steep and some long and rolling. Running in the grass is harder than running on pavement but they have a nice blacktop path through the park. I usually run in the grass up and down the hills along the tree line.

The worst thing to wear running when it is cold

I don't know why school track classes wear sweatpants and sweatshirts. The wind blows right through them and is very cold on bare skin. After you run for a while and get sweaty it is worse because the fabric absorbs the sweat becomes ice cold. This ice cold fabric then blows up against bare skin.

Never wear sweat pants and if you wear sweatshirts make sure to have a long sleeved t-shirt underneath and a vinyl windbreaker over it.
