Kewanee Run Your Ice Off 5k Run

My favorite new years day race is the Hardcore run in Kewanee. I think I first ran this race in 1983, there was not any snow but the streets were covered with thick ice. It was hard enough to stand up let alone run. In past years there have been combinations of ice and snow. Last year there was about 4 inches of snow on ground. I remember several years back there had been freezing rain on top of snow the night before.

How Is Your Running Form?

One of the many things you can do to significantly reduce your split times is to constantly monitor your form while running. This is mark of the professional runner, experienced runners concentrate on breathing and form, while running and newbies try to think about other things. After running for a while you will find that concentrating on your running form can improve your over all race times quite a bit. Some of the things you need to watch are listed here.

First cold night of the year

Running Journal 5:19 PM 12/6/2017 Wed
Central, IL Wednesday 5:00 PM Cloudy 33°F
Precipitation: 0%
Humidity: 72%
Wind: 12 mph
It was cold and windy tonight but after the mile or half mile you don't notice. I just wore tights and a hooded sweatshirt and a windbreaker with stocking cap and gloves. When it gets colder I will wear two pairs of tights.
It was perfect It was not too hot or too cold. Nice 5 mile run.

Take a break in between periods of hard training

Ran just 3 miles tonight. Legs felt very sluggish, I think these may be times when your muscles are in a rebuilt phase. The first part of which is to tear them down before rebuilding them stronger than they were. These are the times when a lot injuries can occur. You could train really hard, and cause a start of the teardown phase of the rebuilding process which makes you stronger. The first part of this phase is teardown and if your training continues at the same rate or increases, injuries can occur.

Getting Volunteers Is The Hardest Part

Getting Volunteers are the hardest part of putting on a race. It is comparably easy to just do the work yourself, because of all of the work necessary to put on a race, this is not possible. The harder part of trying getting others to help is necessary. It is a proven fact that in any group two or three percent of the people do 100% of the work. As one who has been a race director, I know that before that I had no idea of the amount of work that goes into putting on a race. It is so much more fun to talk to friends before and after running, instead of helping.

My PRs

When I finish a race and someone asks "Was that a PR" I often joke that PR means possible recovery. PR which really stands for personal record is what makes running the most fun. I remember all my PRs well.

I Love Running

I think about running all the time. All of my friends are running friends and all of the best times of my life have been while running. I especially love racing sometimes going to 20 or 25 a year. The best memories I have are all at races.

You know I love running t-shirts

I wear them everyday. When I first started running in the early 1980's it was so hard and I was so proud of the t-shirt got for running that race. I know most people don’t even know what that funny colored t-shirt is for and probably think I am strange for wearing it but I don’t care. For me running is to impress myself.
